Yes, most WordPress sites are horribly bloated. That doesn't have to be the case though. Here's how I built my own WP theme that allows my homepage to be <100kb with only 4 HTTP requests. Yes, you can make a sustainable site with WordPress.

@chris Well another wordpress site which is quite efficient is and it's very different from a typical static-style blog and more made it into one of those social blogging platforms.

And as for why wordpress is seen as horribly inefficient, I think it's more a case of a widespread usage than a technical thing, specially as static-site folks are more likely to do byte-minimalism.
