The @gnome lawsuit is over, and looks like a win for Free Software:

Sometimes the day does start with good news :blobcatcoffee:

The latest in DNS Amplification DDoS

New vulnerability in DNS server software can be leveraged for DDoS attacks with an 1620x amplification factor.

A good thought experiment: is it actually harder to teach someone to use Ubuntu 20.04 than Windows 10 for general computing tasks like web browsing, email, word processing, and light photo editing?

If so - why?

I listen to a LOT of music and podcasts. We have Sonos speakers throughout the house for it and I have a Spotify subscription for music and use Pocketcasts for podcasts. As I look at a PinePhone I think this will be my biggest hangup. Still going to buy one, though. For the price I believe I can add an extra sim card via xfinity mobile for no charge so it seems worth the risk. I'm guessing it will be my "daily" phone and my pixel will be my "travel" phone.

Well it took over a year but we managed to get Google Fonts removed from the Mozilla Rust project. Thanks to everyone who helped out and supported this.

Devs don’t let devs add surveillance to their tools.

I've finally got Nextcloud on a solid server and to a point where it's a truly usable replacement for my entire old Google account. I had been going without a few features for a while so I'm really excited to be able to edit office documents, get mail, etc from one place again.

The developers dilemma: “I don’t need a framework, the few things I need I can code myself” turns out to become a framework soon after other developers join in. Lesson: Code is bigger than people. Your collection of hacks is a framework once shared. #Oops

I just saw something about how Mount Everest is visible from Kathmandu for the first time in decades thanks to COVID lockdowns reducing air pollution.

This is good news and I’m feeling that good mood boost.

I want to compile a single master list of good things that have come from the COVID lockdowns. Please send them my way.

This is a boostable toot and a toostable boot.

The highest mountain on Earth is known as Sagarmatha (सगरमाथा) in Nepali, meaning “goddess of the sky” and Qomolangma (ཇོ་མོ་གླང་མ) in Tibetan, meaning “holy mother”. The name “Everest” wasn’t given until 1865. Even the guy it was named after objected, and wanted them to keep a local name for it. Sadly, they did not.

The true names of places in the world always sound much nicer than the colonial names to me.

Hi Fediverse 👋

to break the quietness of this account, here's a quick news flash:

- We added a list with Zoom alternatives 🤙

- We replaced some entries on "Bubbling under" 🔧

- We added Cryptpad to the Doodle list as it has a poll feature 🗒️

- Our DRM article has images now 🙃

- We have an Audible list in the pipeline 🎧

Thanks to @uniq for the nudge to write this! 😊👍

COVID-19, New Orleans, prison labor

New Orleans is replacing striking garbage workers with prison laborers who are being paid 13% of what the striking garbage workers made.

As I switch from YNAB to GnuCash I will say there are quirks and GC isn't as pretty as YNAB but I'm actually finding it more usable for the way I've tracked my accounts for the last 20+ years. That's a major win. I wish I had devoted time to it sooner!

The stories about Microsoft's "change of heart" in regards to FOSS tells me just how corrupt the FOSS world has gotten. It's now viewed as a vehicle to suck up data by all too many players. This won't end well.
