hot take about political discourse

We should go back to calling the current state of affairs in much of the world "modern capitalism". "Late capitalism" is a little too optimistic right now.

So I'm back from the UK and now using a whole heckton of petrol whenever I drive my American car around and it sucks mightily.

Here's a pic from my UK hire car's dashboard after a mix of motorways and winding country roads. It was a fairly big car so didn't have as good mileage as the one I hired last time I was home, but 60mpg is still a pipe dream in the US.

This was a straight-up petrol engine. Not a hybrid. Fast as heck.

This is why I say American petrol prices STILL aren't high enough.

American cars have such crap mileage because American petrol has cost just north of nothing basically forever. They've never had to design a decent engine, or build roads with roundabouts instead of making everyone accelerate from a stop every two minutes. Nearly-free petrol sounds great until you realise that you end up spending the same money because the cars and roads are so crappy you end up using two or three times as much.

I’m still good on catching up on the weekend email if the weekend lasts through tomorrow, right?

My iPad would be a really powerful tool with a good keyboard that I could actually use in my lap.

Does anyone have recommendations for places to visit / activities around Zurich, Lugano, the Dolomites, and Innsbruck? I'm planning a trip with the family this summer.

Just woke up from a nightmare. In it, I built a website with a newsletter popup. Gotta take a shower now and cleanse myself of that filth

Finished my 1st test for my FIRC (flight instructor renewal course). That was rough!

Not sure how I did it as I don’t watch much TV at all but, logged into my Netflix account for the first time in a while this afternoon and probably 90% of everything it recommends to me in every category is an Indian movie. If they stay I’m sure I will watch some but as a cis-passing, 43 year old white man in Florida I gotta say the algorithm is definitely interesting.

Today's adventure: driving up to Ikea in Tampa to get a shelf they finally have in stock. Not looking forward to this trip.

At least it's a 4-day weekend. I need to spend some time trying to finish my Flight Instructor renewal as well as I would love to spend some time on my own projects.

My advice to the new citizens of Mastodon. First of all: Welcome! Thank you for being around.

Find at least one interesting profile by going through their timeline. Have a look at their followers and who they follow. Follow them all :) You can always unfollow later. Give it a bit of time. You don’t have to frantically check your timeline. Once a day or even a week is the better approach. You’ll be surprised how a slow but steady approach results in a fascinating timeline. Hope this helps!
